Veneer Chipped or Fell Off? What to Do

Medically reviewed by Dr. Vivian Menendez, DMD · Published

If a veneer chips or comes off, stay calm: it's rarely a true emergency. Save the veneer or any pieces in a clean container, don't glue it back yourself, avoid chewing on that side and call your dentist. Get help the same day if you have pain, swelling, bleeding or a sharp edge cutting your mouth.

First, what probably happened

A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic shell bonded to the front of a tooth. When something goes wrong, it's usually one of these:

  • A small chip: a tiny piece breaks off the edge, often from biting something hard.
  • A crack or larger fracture: a line or a bigger missing section across the veneer.
  • A loose or fallen veneer: the bond between the veneer and the tooth failed, and the shell came off — often in one piece.

Common causes include biting ice, pens, nails or hard candy, opening packages with your teeth, a blow to the mouth, nighttime grinding, or decay or gum changes at the edge of the veneer.

What to do in the first hour

  1. Find and save the veneer or the pieces. Rinse them gently and keep them in a small, clean, dry container or a sealed bag. Bring them to your appointment; sometimes an intact veneer can be re-bonded.
  2. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  3. Check for sharp edges. If the remaining tooth or veneer edge is rough, you can cover it temporarily with a small piece of orthodontic wax or sugar-free chewing gum.
  4. Don't glue it back. Household or super glues are toxic and damage the tooth and veneer. Over-the-counter temporary dental cements exist, but using them on a veneer can trap bacteria and make proper re-bonding harder. Leave that to your dentist.
  5. Call your dentist. Describe what happened and whether you have pain.

What to do until your appointment

  • Chew on the other side and choose soft foods.
  • Avoid very hot, very cold and sugary foods if the exposed tooth is sensitive. The tooth under a veneer has lost a thin layer of enamel and can feel cold more easily.
  • Keep brushing gently and keep the area clean.
  • Wear your night guard if you have one, to protect the other veneers.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed, following the label and only if it's safe for you.

When it's urgent

Call right away and ask to be seen the same day if you have:

  • Pain that's strong, throbbing or getting worse.
  • Swelling in the gum, face or jaw.
  • Bleeding that doesn't stop with gentle pressure.
  • A tooth underneath that's broken, loose or dark.
  • A blow to the face, especially if other teeth were affected.

Repair, re-bond or replace?

Situation What usually happens
Veneer came off whole, tooth healthy Often cleaned and re-bonded, if it's undamaged and fits well
Very small chip on the edge Sometimes smoothed and polished, or repaired with composite resin
Larger chip or crack Usually a new veneer is made
Problem with the tooth underneath The tooth is treated first; then a new veneer, or sometimes a crown

The decision depends on the size of the damage, how old the veneer is, and the health of the tooth underneath. A repair with composite resin can be a reasonable fix for a small chip; our guide to fixing a chipped tooth explains how bonding works. For larger damage, a new veneer usually gives a more lasting result.

Matching a single new veneer

Replacing one veneer means it must match the ones around it in color, translucency and shape — even after years in the mouth. That's a delicate job. At Art Dental Studio, replacement veneers are hand-crafted in-house by master ceramist Enrique in our in-house dental lab, so the new piece can be compared with your other teeth directly. Our guide on choosing a natural veneer shade explains why that matters.

How to prevent it from happening again

  • Don't use your teeth as tools: no opening bottles or packages, no biting nails or pens.
  • Avoid chewing ice and very hard foods with your front teeth.
  • Wear a custom night guard if you grind or clench — see veneers and teeth grinding.
  • Use a mouthguard for contact sports.
  • Keep up with checkups and cleanings so small problems at the edges are caught early.

Questions to ask at your appointment

  • Can my veneer be re-bonded, or does it need to be replaced?
  • Is the tooth underneath healthy?
  • What caused it to come off or chip?
  • How will you match the new veneer to my other teeth?
  • Should I be wearing a night guard?

The bottom line

A chipped or loose veneer is fixable. Save the pieces, protect the tooth, don't glue it yourself and call your dentist promptly — the same day if there is pain or swelling. Then find out why it happened, so the repair lasts.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my veneer falls off?

Stay calm, rinse the veneer gently and keep it in a small clean container. Rinse your mouth, avoid chewing on that side and call your dentist. Bring the veneer to your appointment, since an intact veneer can sometimes be cleaned and re-bonded.

Can I glue my veneer back on at home?

No. Household glues are toxic and can damage the tooth and the veneer. Even over-the-counter temporary dental cements can trap bacteria and make proper re-bonding harder. Cover any sharp edge with orthodontic wax and let your dentist reattach it.

When is a broken veneer an emergency?

Call right away and ask to be seen the same day if you have strong or worsening pain, swelling, bleeding that will not stop, a broken or loose tooth underneath, or a blow to the face. If there is any sign of head injury, go to an emergency room first.
