How to Fix a Chipped Tooth in Miami

Reviewed by the Art Dental Studio Clinical Team · Published

A chipped tooth is one of the most common dental concerns we treat — and almost always something we can fix the same day at Art Dental Studio. Whether it happened from biting something hard, a sports injury, an accident, or just years of wear catching up, this guide tells you exactly what to do, what your options are, and what to expect.

First — is it an emergency?

A chipped tooth is an urgent dental issue but rarely a true emergency requiring immediate care. Get same-day evaluation, but you don't need to rush to the ER. Here's how to tell the difference:

Call us within hours if:

  • Severe, throbbing pain
  • The chip is large and exposed the pink/red inner tissue
  • The tooth is loose
  • There's significant bleeding from the gum line
  • You can see a visible crack extending into the gum

Schedule within 1-3 days if:

  • Small chip with mild or no pain
  • The tooth feels rough but isn't sensitive
  • No visible inner tissue (the inside of the chipped area is still hard and white)
  • Just an aesthetic concern, no functional issue

In both cases, we can typically get you in same-day or next-day at our Miami, Cooper City or Kendall locations.

What to do right now (before your visit)

While you're waiting for your appointment:

  1. Save the broken piece if possible. Put it in a small container with milk or saliva (NOT water). Sometimes we can re-bond the original piece.

  2. Rinse with warm salt water to clean the area and reduce inflammation.

  3. Cover sharp edges if the chip is cutting your tongue or cheek. Use a small piece of sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax (available at any pharmacy) pressed onto the rough edge.

  4. If you are in pain, contact us before taking any medication — we will guide you based on your specific situation.

  5. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face if there's swelling.

  6. Avoid chewing on that side. Eat soft foods until you can be seen.

Your repair options

The right repair depends on the size and location of the chip. During your visit, Dr. Vivian Menendez evaluates and recommends one of these options:

Option 1: Composite bonding (most common, same-day)

Lifespan: 5-8 years

For small to medium chips, composite bonding is the go-to repair. Tooth-colored resin is applied to the chipped area, shaped to restore the original tooth form, and cured with a light. Done in one visit, no anesthesia typically needed, and the result is virtually invisible.

Bonding is ideal when:

  • The chip is small to medium
  • The surrounding tooth is healthy
  • You want a fast, affordable repair
  • You want to preserve as much natural tooth as possible

Option 2: Porcelain veneer (cosmetic upgrade)

Lifespan: 15-20+ years

For visible front teeth with a chip, a porcelain veneer is the long-term premium option. A thin shell of hand-crafted porcelain covers the entire front of the tooth, hiding the chip and any other imperfections.

Veneers are worth considering when:

  • Multiple front teeth are chipped or worn
  • You also want to improve color, shape, or alignment
  • You want the longest-lasting, most natural-looking repair
  • The chip is large or affects an aesthetically critical area

Option 3: Dental crown (large chip with structural damage)

Lifespan: 15-25+ years

For large chips that compromise the tooth's structural integrity (especially molars used for chewing), a crown covers the entire tooth 360 degrees and restores full strength.

Crowns are the right choice when:

  • The chip is large or the tooth is cracked into the structure
  • The tooth has a large existing filling weakening it
  • It's a back tooth needing full bite force restoration
  • The damage extends below the gum line

Option 4: Root canal + crown (chip exposing pulp)

If the chip is severe enough to expose the inner pulp (you'll typically see pink or red tissue, with significant sensitivity to temperature), the tooth needs a root canal first to remove the now-exposed pulp, followed by a crown to protect the treated tooth.

This sounds intimidating but modern root canals are largely painless and save the tooth from needing extraction.

Option 5: Extraction + implant (last resort)

If the chip extends below the gum line into the root or splits the tooth in half, the tooth may be non-restorable and requires extraction. A dental implant can then replace it, on a timeline personalized to your case. We exhaust all options to save the natural tooth before recommending extraction.

How to prevent future chips

The most common causes of chipped teeth:

  1. Biting hard objects — ice, pen caps, fingernails, popcorn kernels
  2. Untreated tooth decay — weakens the tooth structure
  3. Old fillings near the chewing surface — they wear out and the tooth fractures around them

If you've chipped a tooth, look at whether any of these apply. Often the chip is a warning that something needs to change — habits, protective gear, or addressing underlying issues.

What to expect at your appointment

A typical chipped tooth appointment at Art Dental Studio:

  1. Check-in and history (5 min) — when did it happen, any pain
  2. Exam and X-ray (10 min) — assess the damage extent
  3. Discussion of options (5-10 min) — Dr. Vivian explains your repair options with realistic pricing
  4. Treatment (30-90 min depending on chosen repair) — performed same-day for bonding
  5. Follow-up scheduling (5 min) — for crown or veneer cases, schedule the second visit

Total time: typically under 90 minutes for same-day bonding repair.
