Unlike over-the-counter products that use 5-14% peroxide concentration, our in-office system uses 25-40% — applied with gum protection by a clinician. We also offer custom take-home trays for patients who prefer gradual whitening or want a long-term maintenance solution.
How does professional teeth whitening work?
All effective teeth whitening uses one of two active ingredients: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These break down into water and oxygen, and the oxygen penetrates the enamel to break apart stain molecules within the tooth. The higher the concentration, the faster the results — which is why professional in-office whitening (25-40% concentration) is so much more effective than drugstore strips (5-14%).
In our in-office session, a protective barrier is placed on your gums, then the whitening gel is applied to your teeth in 15-20 minute cycles. Some systems use a special light to accelerate the reaction. The entire visit takes 60-90 minutes and you see immediate results — typically several shades brighter.
Important: whitening works only on natural tooth enamel. It does not affect porcelain veneers, crowns, fillings or bonding. This is why we always whiten any natural teeth before placing veneers — so the color match holds long-term.
Who is a candidate for professional whitening?
Most patients with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates. The ideal candidate typically has:
- Natural tooth discoloration from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco or aging
- Healthy gums (no active gum disease or recession exposing roots)
- No active cavities (we treat any decay before whitening)
- No existing front-tooth fillings or veneers (they won't whiten with the rest)
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding (we postpone elective whitening during this time)
- Realistic expectations — whitening lifts stains, doesn't change tooth shape or alignment

Pre-whitening exam
We check for cavities, gum recession or sensitivity issues that need addressing first. We also recommend a professional cleaning right before whitening (removes surface stains, allowing the gel to work on the underlying color).

Gum protection
A light-cured protective barrier is applied to your gums. This protects soft tissue from contact with the high-concentration peroxide.

Gel application (cycle 1)
25-40% hydrogen peroxide gel is painted onto your teeth and left in place for 15-20 minutes. Some systems activate with a special light during this time.

Rinse and reapply
After the first cycle, the gel is rinsed off and a fresh layer is applied. Most patients do 2-3 cycles per session for optimal results.

Final results
After the last cycle, your teeth are rinsed and gum protection removed. You see immediate results — typically several shades brighter than when you arrived.

Custom take-home trays (optional)
For long-term maintenance, we take impressions and create custom-fitted trays. You apply prescription-strength gel at home (15-22% carbamide peroxide) once every 6-12 months to maintain brightness.
After your whitening session
There is no real recovery period — you can return to normal activities immediately. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity to cold drinks or air for 24-72 hours after treatment. This resolves on its own.
For the first 48 hours after whitening, the "white diet" is recommended: avoid coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, berries, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar and tobacco. Your tooth enamel is more porous during this window — staining substances can re-discolor faster.
After 48 hours, you can return to normal eating and drinking. Results typically last 1-3 years depending on your habits. Patients with custom take-home trays do 2-3 day touch-ups every 6-12 months to maintain the original brightness.
