What counts as a dental emergency?
Not every dental issue is an emergency. Routine sensitivity, a small chip without pain, or a lost filling without sharp pain can usually wait 24-48 hours for a regular appointment. But certain conditions require immediate care to prevent permanent damage, severe pain or systemic infection.
Time-critical emergencies include: knocked-out (avulsed) permanent tooth (best chance of saving the tooth is within 30-60 minutes), severe uncontrolled pain (often indicates infection), significant facial swelling (can become dangerous if airway is compromised), uncontrolled bleeding after trauma, and broken jaw or facial trauma.
Less urgent but same-day priority: lost or broken crown exposing a sensitive tooth, broken restoration with sharp edges cutting your tongue, abscess (visible pimple on gum), severe sensitivity preventing eating or sleeping, and orthodontic appliance causing significant discomfort.
What to do RIGHT NOW
If you are experiencing any of these — call us first, then follow the relevant first-aid steps:
- Knocked-out tooth: pick up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently in milk or saline (not water), try to re-insert it into the socket if possible, or store in milk and come immediately
- Severe pain: contact us right away before taking any medication — we will guide you; a cold compress on the outside of the face can help while you reach us
- Facial swelling: cold compress, no heat, call us immediately — if swelling extends to the eye or throat, go to ER
- Broken tooth with sharp edge: rinse with warm salt water, cover sharp edge with dental wax or sugarless gum, call us
- Lost crown or filling: keep the piece if possible, avoid chewing on that side, call to schedule re-cementation
- Abscess (pus): rinse with warm salt water, do NOT apply heat, call us — abscess can become serious quickly

Pre-arrival instructions
We will give you specific first-aid steps based on your situation (cold compress, pain management, how to handle a knocked-out tooth, etc.). Follow these carefully — they can affect treatment outcomes.

Arrival and triage
When you arrive, we triage immediately. Severe cases bypass routine scheduling. We take any necessary X-rays and Dr. Vivian Menendez or the on-call doctor examines you within 15-20 minutes of arrival.

Immediate intervention
Based on diagnosis: pain relief and antibiotics if infection, re-implantation if knocked-out tooth, temporary restoration if broken crown, root canal if dying tooth, extraction if tooth is non-restorable. We do whatever can be done same-day.

Follow-up plan
Most emergency situations require a follow-up appointment for permanent treatment (e.g., permanent crown after temporary, permanent restoration after root canal). We schedule this before you leave.

After-hours care
For emergencies outside business hours, call any location's main line — voicemail provides instructions for life-threatening dental emergencies. Most can wait until morning; true emergencies should go to ER for stabilization.
After your emergency visit
Recovery depends on the specific treatment performed. After an emergency root canal: 3-7 days of mild to moderate discomfort managed with prescribed pain medication. After re-implantation of a knocked-out tooth: 2-4 weeks of soft diet and splinting. After abscess treatment with antibiotics: relief within 24-48 hours, complete the full antibiotic course.
For pain management: contact us before taking any medication — we will guide you based on your situation; cold compresses for swelling, avoid the affected side when chewing for 24-48 hours. If pain or swelling worsens after treatment, call us immediately — this can indicate complications that need attention.
Follow-up appointment is critical: most emergency treatments are temporary stabilization. The permanent restoration (crown, bridge, implant) typically happens 1-6 weeks later. Skipping the follow-up often leads to recurring problems and more expensive treatment later.

Try to re-insert it back into the socket if you can — this gives the best chance of saving it. If you cannot re-insert, store the tooth in milk or in your cheek. Call us immediately. Otherwise, call us — we can typically treat you same-day.
