Same-day cosmetic repairs.
Tooth-colored resin to fix chips, gaps and discoloration in one visit, no enamel removal, reversible.
Composite bonding is a fast, affordable cosmetic treatment that uses tooth-colored resin to repair chips, close small gaps, mask discoloration and reshape teeth — all in a single visit. Unlike porcelain veneers (which are crafted in a lab and require enamel reduction), bonding is applied directly to your tooth and shaped by hand by Dr. Vivian Menendez. The treatment is ideal for small cosmetic improvements where porcelain veneers would be overkill. Lifespan: 5-8 years (vs 15-20+ for porcelain). Reversibility: bonding can be removed without permanent damage to the tooth.
What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding (also called dental bonding or composite resin) is a cosmetic procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied directly to the tooth, shaped, and hardened with a special curing light. The result is a seamless repair that matches the surrounding tooth color.
Bonding is most commonly used to repair small chips, close minor gaps between teeth, cover small areas of discoloration that cannot be whitened, reshape slightly uneven teeth, and as a less invasive alternative to veneers for minor cosmetic improvements.
Unlike porcelain veneers, composite bonding requires no enamel reduction (your natural tooth is preserved), can typically be completed in one appointment, costs significantly less, and is reversible. The trade-off: bonding lasts 5-8 years vs 15-20+ for porcelain veneers, and it can stain over time (unlike porcelain which is highly stain-resistant).
Is composite bonding right for me?
Composite bonding is ideal when:
- You have small chips, cracks or rough edges on visible teeth
- You want to close small gaps without orthodontics
- A single tooth is slightly discolored from trauma or root canal
- You want a same-day cosmetic improvement before an event
- Your budget rules out porcelain veneers
- You want a reversible option (no permanent enamel removal)
Composite bonding process at Art Dental Studio
- 01
Free consultation
Dr. Vivian Menendez evaluates the teeth, takes photographs, and discusses whether bonding is the right approach or if you would be better served by veneers, whitening or orthodontics.
- 02
Color matching
A composite resin shade is selected to match your surrounding teeth exactly. Multiple shades are typically used (different shades for different parts of the tooth) to create a natural-looking gradient.
- 03
Tooth preparation
Minimal preparation — the tooth surface is gently roughened (etched) to help the bonding material adhere. No anesthesia is typically needed.
- 04
Composite application
The resin is applied in thin layers and shaped by hand to achieve the desired form. Each layer is cured with a high-intensity light that hardens the resin in seconds.
- 05
Sculpting and polishing
Once all layers are cured, Dr. Vivian shapes the final form and polishes the surface to a high shine. The result is indistinguishable from natural enamel.
- 06
Bite check
We verify the bite is correct so the bonding doesn't feel "high" or interfere with chewing. The entire procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes per tooth.
After your bonding appointment
There is no recovery period — you can eat and drink normally immediately after the appointment (no anesthesia, no waiting). Some patients notice the new shape for a few hours before it feels completely natural.
For the first 48 hours, avoid intensely staining substances (coffee, red wine, berries, tobacco) — the bonded surface is slightly more porous during this initial period. After 48 hours your normal diet is fine, though long-term coffee/tea/wine drinkers should expect bonded teeth to stain faster than natural enamel.
Maintain bonding with the same habits as natural teeth: brush twice daily, floss daily, regular 6-month cleanings. Avoid biting hard objects (ice, pen caps, fingernails) that could chip the bonding. With proper care, expect 5-8 years before touch-up or replacement.

With proper care — brushing, flossing, avoiding biting hard objects, regular 6-month cleanings — composite bonding at Art Dental Studio lasts 5-8 years on average. Heavy coffee, tea or red wine drinkers may see staining and need touch-ups sooner. Bonded teeth are slightly more vulnerable to chipping than porcelain veneers.
For small cosmetic improvements (single chips, small gaps, minor discoloration), bonding is faster, cheaper and reversible. For comprehensive smile transformation, multiple teeth, or longer lifespan, porcelain veneers are the better choice. Lifespan: bonding 5-8 years vs veneers 15-20+. Dr. Vivian Menendez will recommend the right option for your case.
Yes — this is a major advantage over veneers. Bonding can be removed without permanent damage to the underlying tooth (the tooth surface is only roughened, not reduced). If you decide later to switch to veneers, the bonding can be ground off and the natural tooth is preserved underneath.
No — bonding typically requires no anesthesia. The procedure is minimally invasive (just roughening the tooth surface, no drilling). Most patients describe the appointment as comparable to a routine cleaning.
Yes. Composite bonding is typically completed in a single appointment of 30-60 minutes per tooth. This is one of the biggest advantages over veneers (which require 2-3 visits over 2-4 weeks). Bonding is ideal for patients who want a quick cosmetic fix before an event.
Yes, bonding can stain over time — more so than porcelain or natural enamel. Coffee, tea, red wine, berries and tobacco are the main culprits. Most bonded teeth need polishing every 1-2 years to maintain their original color. After 5-8 years, replacement is usually needed.
No — whitening only affects natural tooth enamel. Bonding stays the color it was when placed. If you plan to whiten in the future, do it BEFORE bonding so the bonding matches the brighter color of your whitened natural teeth.
