Invisalign — the clear path to alignment

Reviewed by the Art Dental Studio Clinical Team · Published

In the last 20 years, Invisalign has changed adult orthodontics more than any other single innovation. What was once a teenager-only treatment with visible brackets and food restrictions is now a quiet, low-disruption option that millions of adults use to fix decades of avoided alignment work. As an Invisalign Preferred Provider, Art Dental Studio handles cases from minor cosmetic alignment to complex bite corrections. Here's how the system actually works, who it's right for, and what to know before starting.

What Invisalign actually is

Invisalign is a system of custom-made clear plastic aligners that gradually move your teeth into a planned final position. Each aligner is worn for the prescribed period before being replaced with the next one in the series. Over the course of treatment, you move through a series of aligners until your teeth reach the final designed position.

The aligners are made of medical-grade thermoplastic — not metal, not brackets, not wires. They're nearly invisible when worn. They're removable for eating, brushing and special occasions. They're custom-molded to your teeth from a 3D scan, not impressions.

This is what makes Invisalign so different from traditional braces: there's no fixed hardware in your mouth, no brackets bonded to teeth, no wires to adjust. The aligners do the moving — and you stay in control of when they're in and out.

How Invisalign treatment works step by step

1. Free consultation and 3D scan

At your first visit at Art Dental Studio, Dr. Yilian evaluates whether you're an Invisalign candidate (most adults are). We use an iTero digital scanner to capture your teeth in 3D — no goopy impression material. This scan goes to Invisalign for treatment planning.

2. Treatment plan preview

Within 1-2 weeks, you'll see a 3D simulation of how your teeth will move from start to finish. You can see your projected final smile before deciding to proceed. We adjust the plan if anything looks off — you have input before any aligners are made.

3. Aligner manufacturing

Once you approve the plan, Invisalign manufactures your custom aligners. Depending on your case, you may receive all aligners at once or in batches.

4. Wearing the aligners

You wear each aligner 20-22 hours per day, removing only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush/floss. Each set is worn for 1-2 weeks before switching to the next. You don't feel teeth moving in real time — but you notice the change every time you compare to old photos.

5. Check-in visits

We see you every 6-10 weeks to confirm progress is on track. These visits are short — usually 15-20 minutes. Some Invisalign cases use attachments (small tooth-colored bumps bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners apply directional force); these are checked and replaced as needed.

6. Refinement (if needed)

Most cases involve a refinement phase at the end — additional aligners to fine-tune the final position. This is built into the price and not unusual.

7. Retention

Once treatment is complete, you wear retainers indefinitely to maintain the result. Without retention, teeth shift back over months and years. This is true of any orthodontic treatment, not just Invisalign.

What Invisalign can fix

Modern Invisalign can address most alignment issues that traditional braces can:

  • Crowding (teeth overlapping or pushed forward/back)
  • Spacing (gaps between teeth)
  • Crossbite (some upper teeth fitting inside lower teeth)
  • Overbite (upper teeth excessively covering lower)
  • Underbite (lower teeth in front of upper)
  • Open bite (front teeth don't touch when biting down)
  • Mild to moderate skeletal issues (positioning of upper and lower jaw)
  • Relapse from previous orthodontic work

What Invisalign struggles with

For full transparency — these are the cases where traditional braces may still produce better results:

  • Severe skeletal misalignment that requires surgical orthodontics
  • Significant tooth rotation (more than 20 degrees) on certain teeth — possible with Invisalign but slower and less predictable than braces
  • Eruption issues in growing patients where teeth haven't fully emerged
  • Cases where patient compliance is genuinely uncertain — Invisalign requires self-discipline to wear 20+ hours daily

At your consultation, Dr. Yilian will tell you honestly which option is better for your specific case. We don't push Invisalign for cases where braces would produce a better outcome.

How long does Invisalign take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the specific needs of each patient. During your free consultation, we will evaluate your case and give you a personalized treatment plan with an accurate timeline.

The wear-time question (this is where success or failure happens)

The biggest single factor in Invisalign success is how strictly you wear the aligners. Plan for 20-22 hours per day:

  • Take them out only for meals, drinks (other than water), brushing/flossing
  • Put them back in immediately after eating
  • Sleep with them in
  • Carry your case everywhere — never wrap aligners in a napkin (they get thrown out)

Patients who genuinely commit to this finish on schedule. Patients who wear them inconsistently see treatment significantly extend and may end up with results that don't fully match the original plan. We're honest with patients during the consultation: if you don't think you can commit to the wear-time, traditional braces might serve you better.

What it's like day-to-day

For most patients, life with Invisalign is genuinely unremarkable:

  • Eating: take aligners out, eat normally, brush before putting them back. Skip frequent snacking (each snack requires removal + cleaning before re-insertion).
  • Drinking: water is fine with aligners in. Anything else — coffee, tea, soda, wine, juice — requires removing them first.
  • Speaking: takes 2-7 days to fully adjust. You'll have a mild lisp during that period. After adjustment, most people speak completely normally.
  • Discomfort: each new aligner feels tight for 1-3 days as teeth shift. Adjustment days get easier as you progress.
  • Social events: aligners come out for special occasions if needed — just account for the wear-time loss.
  • Sports and music: Invisalign is much friendlier than braces. No brackets to break during contact sports; no wires interfering with brass instruments.
  • Cleaning: rinse aligners every time you take them out; brush them gently with a soft brush; soak in Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaner once a week.

Common questions

Is Invisalign covered by insurance? For questions about insurance coverage, please contact us directly. Every plan is different and we want to make sure we give you accurate information based on your specific coverage.

Can I drink coffee with Invisalign? Not with the aligners in — hot liquids warp the plastic, and dark drinks stain it. Remove aligners before coffee, drink, brush teeth, then reinsert.

Does Invisalign work as well as braces? For most cases, yes. For very complex cases (severe rotations, surgical orthodontics), braces may be the better choice. Dr. Yilian will tell you honestly which option is right for your case during the free consultation.

Will Invisalign give me a lisp? Mildly, for 2-7 days. Then it goes away as your tongue adapts. Most patients are speaking normally within a week.

Am I too old for Invisalign? No. There's no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. The majority of Invisalign patients at Art Dental Studio are adults. Many in their 40s, 50s and 60s complete treatment successfully.

Can I whiten my teeth during Invisalign treatment? Yes — the aligners double as whitening trays. You can apply professional whitening gel inside the aligners and wear them as you normally would. We can provide gel during your treatment.

What happens if I lose an aligner? Don't panic. Move forward to the next aligner if you're close to the change day, or back to the previous one if you're early in the wear period. Call us — we can usually get a replacement quickly.

Will my teeth shift back after Invisalign? Without retainers, yes. Lifetime retention is required after any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign. We provide your first retainer set as part of your treatment.

Can I get Invisalign while pregnant? Yes — Invisalign is considered safe during pregnancy. No anesthesia, no required X-rays for routine progress visits. Just let us know if you become pregnant during treatment.

Invisalign vs. cheaper mail-order at-home aligners? Mail-order at-home aligner services skip the in-person evaluation and ongoing clinical oversight that catch issues before they become problems, and they typically handle only the simplest cosmetic alignment cases. Invisalign with a licensed dentist includes professional supervision at every step — which is safer and produces more predictable outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old for clear aligners?

No — there is no upper age limit for orthodontics. Most Invisalign patients at Art Dental Studio are adults, and plenty of people in their 40s, 50s and 60s finish treatment without any trouble.

Can I wear Invisalign while pregnant?

Yes. Invisalign is considered safe during pregnancy: routine check-ups need no anesthesia and no X-rays. Just let your dentist know if you become pregnant partway through treatment.

Are mail-order aligners the same as Invisalign with a dentist?

No. Mail-order aligners skip the in-person exam and the clinical follow-up that catch problems early, and they only handle the simplest cases. With a licensed dentist someone is watching every stage — which is both safer and far more predictable in how the result holds up.
